Department of Health Sciences (DiSS)
Welcome to DiSS!
The Department of Health Sciences (DiSS) is the main medical and healthcare academic unit of the University of Basilicata. It brings together the expertise of researchers and professors across the medical, biological, and pharmaceutical fields, fully integrated with engineering, mathematics, chemistry, physics, social sciences, management, and the humanitiesall applied to medicine, life sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, and healthcare systems.
Established in the 2024/25 academic year as part of a general reorganization of the University, the Department offers two single-cycle Masters degree programs:
- Medicine and Surgery (LM-41)
- Pharmacy (LM-13)
The connection between doctors and pharmacists has evolved into a vital pillar of modern healthcare. Together, these professions are equipped to face emerging diseases by combining advanced scientific knowledge with patient care, strengthening both Regional and National Health Systems.
DiSS addresses the growing need to bridge the gap between healthcare services and university education. We adopt a modern, innovative vision of health sciences that extends beyond individual care to benefit society as a whole, addressing modern scientific, technological, demographic, climate, cultural, and socioeconomic changes.
In this interdisciplinary environment, cross-collaboration fosters cutting-edge research aimed at public health protection, while providing a high-quality academic offer tailored to regional and national needs.
The Department actively promotes research and training across biological, biomedical, surgical, pharmaceutical, and technological innovation fields. At the moment, DiSS offers the following postgraduate programmes in biomedicine and healthcare professions by introducing:
- a Ph.D. program focused on health sciences, life sciences, and related technologies;
- Specialized training programs in Allied Health Professions.
